William Earl Johns

 
(5th February 1893 -21st June 1968)

 
William Earl Johns was an English pilot and writer of adventure stories, usually written under the pen name Captain W. E. Johns although he never held that rank. He is best remembered as the creator of the ace pilot and adventurer Biggles.

Johns served with No. 55 Squadron; he was shot down in September 1918 while flying a DH 4 and became a Prisoner of War.
